Jorge Gavidia Latin Band

Jorge Gavidia is a multi instrumentalist (guitar, tres, mandolin, piano), arranger, composer and educator. He began studying music in high school when he picked up the tenor saxophone and guitar. Throughout high school he played saxophone in the school's concert band and guitar in the jazz band. During his final high school concert he was awarded the most improved senior music student award. At night and on weekends Jorge began his professional career performing shows at the age of 17 with the band Black Lotus. His first gigs were in bars and rock clubs in downtown Toronto, Etobicoke and Jane and Finch. Following high school, he stopped playing saxophone but continued learning mandolin and piano which he still plays today. Jorge left Black Lotus in 2001 in order to further his studies of music in London England. Although he received no formal training in London, he acquired a vast musical education on the street playing in bands and on stage at the many blues and jazz jams around the city. .. .. In 2004 Jorge was back in Toronto. He studied jazz guitar with guitarist and composer James Brown, and classical harmony and composition with Dr. Julian Miran at the Royal Conservatory of Music. Along with writing jazz, latin, and popular music, Jorge has also written chamber and orchestral music which reflects the influences of the European classical tradition on his compositional style. Since 2004 he has been active in Toronto's music scene. He has played in many different bands and has performed and recorded in genres including Jazz, Latin, Rock, Folk, Blues, Hip Hop and Electronic music. .. .. He is currently living in Toronto and is active as a guitar and theory teacher. He also performs on the guitar and cuban tres in his own jazz quartet and is the leader of the band Storyville Project. While he has his own projects he is also part of a duo with vocalist Sarah Begin and performs with various jazz and latin bands in and around Toronto.
