Les Malcommodes & Sonia Johnson

In Quebec the term "malcommode" could be translated as "little troublemaker". The moniker is mostly used in a positive sense, for instance when joking with children. Les Malcommodes are a jazz trio comprised of seasoned jazz musicians. They live up to their name in creating a music that seduces with its dynamic freshness, originality and contagious humour. In keeping with this spirit, all the music of the album was recorded live, without amplification, separation or headphones. Pierre Tanguay on drums is a pillar of the Canadian jazz scene. He is equally at home in the context of improvised, contemporary or even medieval music. He has collaborated with many musicians from allover the world including Fred Frith, Henry Grimes, Marilyn Crispell or Nana Vasconcelos. He is renowned for his enthusiastic musicality. Bassist Daniel Lessard also has a career as pianist and composer. He is a poet in music. Many greats like Gilles Vigneault or Diane Dufresne in Québec and Joe Pass, Kenny Burrell, Fred Hersch or Diane Schuur on the international level have called on his exceptional sensibility. Félix Stüssi, the pianist and composer of the band, also leads a successful sextet featuring famous trombone player Ray Anderson. Stüssi enjoys the freedom and stimulating energy he experiences when playing with his new, audacious trio!

Juno Award winner Sonia Johnson is one of the best Canadian jazz vocalists. Her eclectic career, marked by instructive and inspirational meetings, eloquently testifies this. In her remarkable experiences, we have to remember the stages she shared with renowned artists such as Vic Vogel, François Bourassa, Roberto Lopez, Karen Young, Dawn Tyler Watson, to name a few. She had the joy of sharing a double bill with Diane Tell at Festival Pully-Lavaux à l’heure du Québec, in Switzerland, and with Cyrille Aimée at the Festival de jazz de Québec.

Composer, lyricist, arranger and producer, Sonia Johnson gained recognition with projects warmly welcomed by the industry as well as fans, namely the affectionate and well mastered Le Carré de nos amours, a true masterpiece that earned her the Juno for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year in 2012. A first for a jazz album with creations fully interpreted in the language of Nougaro.
