Gordon Sheard & Sinal Aberto

Formed in 2009, Gordon Sheard & Sinal Aberto perform classics of the Brazilian popular song tradition (featured composers include A. C. Jobim, Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil, and many others), as well as vibrant original compositions that reflect the band’s diverse musical roots (vividly represented on their recent release A New Day). Sinal Aberto’s members number among Canada’s top musicians.

Rio de Janeiro-born vocalist Luanda Jones has performed in numerous concerts and festivals throughout Brazil, and has made a significant mark on the Canadian musical scene since her arrival in Toronto in 2005; in addition to performing with Sinal Aberto and her own trio, Luanda has shared the stage with such luminaries as Guido Basso, Guinga, Benjamim Taubkin, and Fred Martins, among others.

Pianist, composer and leader Gordon Sheard has been a member of Manteca, Rick Shadrach Lazar and the Montuno Police, and the bands of Chuck Mangione, Alain Caron, and Liona Boyd, and is the Head of Composition in Humber College’s prestigious music program.

Mark Kelso, Head of Percussion at Humber, is one of Canada’s most in-demand drummers for both live performances and recording. A very small sampling of the very many high-profile musicians he has performed with includes Gino Vannelli, Michael Bublé, and Holly Cole.

Bassist, composer, and producer Roberto Occhipinti is also a first-call musician who is equally at home in the jazz, classical, and popular music worlds and who has released several albums under his own name. His impressive list of credits includes the Winnipeg Symphony, the Hamilton Philharmonic, the Canadian Opera Company, Jane Bunnett, and Hilario Duran, to name just a few.
