Opportunities for composers and performers

Notices about two cool opportunities - one for composers and one for performers - have come across my desk recently, so I wanted to pass them on.

For Composers
Dean McNeill, a trumpet player and jazz professor at the University of Saskatchewan, has organized a jazz composers' and arrangers' retreat, August 7-13, 2011. There are 30 spots available and throughout the week you will connect with colleagues from across the country; present works in progress for critique and workshop; discuss master works; perform and premier new works; compose/arrange for small group and/or for 11-piece jazz  ensembles and/or for string quartet; and enjoy the beauty of Emma Lake! For complete details visit the retreat's website.

For Performers
The 5th Bucharest International Jazz Competition is inviting applications from instrumentalists and vocalists. It runs May 7 - 13, 2011, and it sounds like a great week of playing, hanging and jamming. To be eligible you have to have been born after May 1st, 1976 (oof - I'm getting old...), and there are 7000 Euro in prizes available. The application deadline is February 10th; see their website for complete details.

If you hear of other similar opportunities, please let me know so that I can help to spread the word!
