TDJ Special Projects

I'm pleased to report that TDJ Special Projects - the new initiative we launched in the fall, offering marketing support to successful applicants - has so far been a success! The inaugural deadline was November 30, and we had 18 submissions...from which we had to choose four. The submissions were all interesting and included first public performances, CD release events, performances with special guests, a jazz mass and a mini-festival (among others); and applicants included artists in every stage of development, from emerging to veteran.

I charged a jury of four with the difficult task of choosing the four projects, and they each brought their perspective and wealth of experience to the table: Jesse Kumagai, Director of Programming for the Corporation of Massey Hall & Roy Thomson Hall; historian, photographer and former Globe and Mail jazz writer Mark Miller; Walter Venafro, veteran Jazz.FM91 on-air personality; and legendary Canadian jazz bassist Dave Young. We gathered for a few hours on a December afternoon to go over the applications and listen to samples, and it's my pleasure to announce the results. The first-ever TDJ Special Projects will be:

  • Ernesto Cervini's MEM3, February 10 at The Trane Studio - a Toronto stop on an Ontario tour as they prepare to record a new album
  • Barry Elmes's CD release, March 10 & 11 at The Rex Hotel
  • Jean Martin's triple-CD release party, April 9 (location to be confirmed)
  • Fern Lindzon's CD release, April 28 at Lula Lounge

Each special project will get a featured page on our website, a dedicated press release, mention in our e-newsletter, mention on our Facebook page and in my blog, and a photo session with Tracey Nolan Studios.

Congratulations to the four successful applicants and thanks to all who made a submission. The results have been positive and so we'll look at launching another round in the fall - stay tuned for details! Until then, I hope that you'll support these projects. More information on each will be available in the near future; check our website for updates.
