Thank you Geoff

You may have already heard that former Toronto Star jazz (and theatre) writer Geoff Chapman passed away yesterday after a long illness. We send condolences to his wife Bilgi and their family.

I did not know Geoff well, but like many other musicians writing tributes today on Facebook, I benefited from his generosity and support. When I started my big band while still an undergraduate student in the University of Toronto's Jazz Performance Program, Geoff did his best to promote our shows, and gave us our first CD review. Over the years he often took time to call or write with a few quick words of encouragement. It was always a pleasure to hear his voice on the other end of the line, or see his name at the end of an email. I'm sure it's not a reviewer's role to offer this kind of support, but I'm glad he chose to do so.

The Toronto Star obituary is here. John Terauds has written a lovely piece on his blog Musical Toronto. And many other tributes have been written on Facebook.

Thank you, Geoff, for your warmth and generosity, for your dedication to jazz and to your craft, and for sharing your incredible knowledge with us all.

Josh
