In the Current presents a concert that will premiere new works for the eleven-piece jazz ensemble. The music is a unique convergence of jazz and contemporary classical music, drawing on influences such as Gil Evans, Bela Bartok and Miles Davis’ Birth of the Cool recording. The concert will include a newly-edited and expanded version of Mike Downes' In the Current suite, as well as premieres of new compositions for the ensemble.

Artist(s):

The In the Current Jazz Ensemble is a new group intended to showcase original compositions for a unique configuration of instrumentalists. The ensemble was first formed to perform a suite written by Mike Downes as part of his master’s thesis in composition at York University. The group generated much interest in its mere two public performances. With the help of a Toronto Arts Council grant, Mike recently composed new material and is eager to present the group as a professional entity.

Colleen Allen (woodwinds)
