Nathan Phillips Square returns once again as the hub of the Festival. For nine nights, the Square will be transformed into a musical oasis as jazz legends, big bands, and the next generation of icons take centre stage.
Tom Richards' Riverrun presents an all-day, non-stop music marathon at Beit Zatoun on Saturday, April 25 as part of the Special Projects. The quartet will play original compositions from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m., and include special guests such as percussionist Blake Howard, dancer Mateo Galindo and guitarist Avi Granite. Our fourth and final presentation of the Special Projects features a new group led by guitarist Alex Goodman: the Alex Goodman Chamber Quintet. In preparation for anupcoming recording, the Quintet will perform original compositions as well as arrangements of classical pieces by composers such as Mozart, Scott Joplin and Schubert. Alex will be joined by Michael Davidson (vibraphone), Andrew Downing (cello), Felicity Williams (vocals) and special guest Rogerio Boccato (percussion).
Bringing fresh jazz to the forefront of the city’s music scene, the new TD Discovery Series will present year-round live music and educational performances featuring some of the best talent in the Toronto scene. Designed by Toronto Downtown Jazz, producers of the TD Toronto Jazz Festival, with the generous support of TD Bank Group, this new initiative encourages the creation, development, and presentation of unique, new programming by local jazz musicians.
Two of Toronto's top aerosol artists, Elicser and Mediah, who have been mentoring local area high school students as part of the Festival's Groove & Graffiti program (now in it's 11th year), have been commissioned to create works of art for some of the city's underpasses.
StreetARToronto, or StART, aims to develop, support, promote and increase awareness of street art and its indispensable role in adding beauty and character to neighbourhoods across Toronto. The Underpass Program will strive to make our city's underpasses safe, walkable and beautiful.
While the Festival may have ended for another year, jazz lives on in other parts of the province. From east to west, north to south, jazz festivals are a staple in Ontario and can be found in practically every corner.
