Stories From Home - Elmer Ferrer

Every week, we ask a different local artist to provide their unique perspective on the pandemic experience from a musician’s point of view. Through words, video and music, each musician will share their story, along with an audio or video sample of a recent project, and a link to purchase their music so that you can support their work.

This week, guitarist, composer and producer Elmer Ferrer reflects on the advantages of technology, being grateful for simple things, and finding new artistic challenges.

"The pandemic has been a huge hit for us all, and for the musicians who tour and play live it has been a 180 degree turn. In my case, I had multiple national and international tours, local gigs, and more cancelled. There have been no live performances for over a year now. Thankfully, I have a home studio and I have been able to keep working with friends on projects like recordings, virtual concerts and online sessions. We are lucky to live in this time with all the positive advantages of technology. A lock down without internet and almost no communication would be even harder.

I have learned to be more thankful and to value the simple things that we take for granted, like just breathing fresh air or visiting someone. I feel really sad for all the people who lost relatives and friends. I hope that we all learn from this and move forward to a more positive world for all of us, and to take better care of each other.

In this period I have been working on a solo album here in my studio, mainly acoustic. I’m forcing myself to play whatever ideas I have for other instruments like string quartets or bass and percussion on the guitars and other stringed instruments I have here. The challenge is fun and I’m really happy with the results so far."
