Hailing from Toronto, DJ MelBoogie is one of the country's best-known female DJs. For 30 years, her roots have been deeply embedded in radio, formerly at CHRY 105.5FM, where she set the primetime morning airwaves on fire for 6 years, followed by over a decade at CKLN 88.1FM, as the DJ/Co-Host of Droppin’ Dimez Radio, Canada’s ONLY All Female Hip Hop Show. She’s currently an on-air host and DJ on Toronto’s VIBE105FM.
Serving the community has always been a personal goal for Mel, and over the years she has contributed her time and voice to various community and music related organizations. Throughout the pandemic, she’s moderated and participated in several panels, specifically focusing on youth in media, music education, and women in the music industry. She has been a judge for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize for the past four years. She recently became the first female Chair for the JUNO Awards Rap Advisory Board, where her role is to increase awareness of the JUNOs among emerging artists and be a liaison to ensure the achievements of artists within the rap music community are recognized. Throughout her time with the JUNOs, she has worked to increase the number of women on the Rap Advisory Board. Additionally, she was selected to be the DJ for the 2023 JUNO Award broadcast, recognizing the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop in Canada.
Mel has hosted several events in the GTA community, including the Toronto Annual Graffiti Expo, Canadian Music Week, North By North East Indie Showcase, and has been a speaker/panelist at a variety of music industry conferences. She has also made several television appearances, including e-Talk Daily, Much Music, New Music, MTV Canada, Toronto Life, and Fashion Television's spin-off, Ooh-La-La. She’s also opened for some of the most respected names in entertainment, including Kevin Hart, LeBron James, Lauryn Hill, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes and Q-Tip, and has gone on tour with some of Canada’s top artists including Maestro Fresh Wes, Michie Mee, The Sorority and more.
Because of her ability to engage the crowd and her passion for all genres of music, Mel is often called upon to DJ/Host a range of corporate events. Companies such as Ralph Lauren, Amazon, eBay Canada, Staples, TD Canada Trust, Wealth Simple, Michael “Pinball” Clemons Foundation (MPCF), MarketWire, New Balance, YWCA/Girls Action Foundation, City of Toronto, and more have included Mel as an integral part of their conferences and special events.
MelBoogie has been the resident DJ for Honey Jam, Canada's longest-running all female showcase (www.phemphat.com), since it launched in 1995, and is Canada's first female CORE DJ, a global collective of DJs who break new artists worldwide. In 2008, Mel won the Stylus Female DJ of the Year Award, naming her the top female DJ in Canada, and was the only DJ selected to participate in Luminato's Mille Femmes Exhibit, dedicated to Toronto's most inspiring women in the creative arts, presented by L'Oreal. In 2011, she was the only female DJ nominated in 3 categories, and took home two awards: one for Underground DJ of the Year, and the other for College Radio Show of the Year. She was also recognized by Manifesto as a pioneer in hip hop, as part of their WombManifesto event.
