Part of Gospel at the Grove, curated by Karen Burke and Darren Hamilton

Founded in 2019 by Dr. Darren Hamilton, the University of Toronto Faculty of Music Gospel Choir is a curricular ensemble that explores and performs various forms of gospel music repertoire, ranging from African American spirituals to mainstream contemporary gospel music. Since its inception, the choir has performed for many Faculty of Music events–most notably the choir hosted and headlined its inaugural Black History Month Concert at Isabel Bader Theatre in early 2024. CBC recently featured the University of Toronto Faculty of Music Gospel Choir in a radio documentary and news article–produced by award-winning documentary producer, Alisa Siegel–on the emergence of curricular gospel programs in Canadian postsecondary institutions. The choir has shared the stage with JUNO-nominated gospel recording artist, Patricia Shirley, and has worked with award-winning Canadian instrumental fusion artist, composer and producer, Desarae Dee. Directed by Dr. Darren Hamilton, a JUNO Award-winning music educator, the University of Toronto Faculty of Music Gospel Choir is excited to make its Toronto Jazz Festival debut at “Gospel at the Grove”.
