The Immersive Artist-in-Residence program is an initiative created by Toronto Downtown Jazz, producers of the annual TD Toronto Jazz Festival, through which one or two emerging and/or mid-career artists are paid a monthly stipend to develop a new project, contribute to audience outreach and engagement activity, and prepare for a Festival performance.
Immersive Artist-In-Residence

Naomi McCarroll-Butler
is the 2022 TD Toronto Jazz Festival
Immersive Artist-in-Residence
Over the last five months, Naomi has been creating an instrumental suite of music for a 15-piece ensemble of improvisers playing various horns, strings, synthesizers and percussion. Inspired by the large ensembles of Alice Coltrane, Matana Roberts, Charles Mingus, Hafez Modirzadeh and Amir El Saffar, the music will combine elements of through-composition with improvisation from the various idioms of the performers.
Naomi is a saxophonist, clarinetist, and instrument maker living in Toronto. An active collaborator, she walks in the cracks between improvised music / free jazz, 'new music’, drone and experimental pop and folk. Here is a taste:
